how long does it take to reestablish a good credit history and score?

Question by ak47:
how long does it take to reestablish a good credit history and score?
I have a bad credit score and right now I am in the process of repaying my debts. Pretty soon I will be finished with school and looking to purchase a car and maybe even an apartment. I wanted to know how long would I have to wait.

Best answer:

Answer by Sarah O
It all depends. I am in the same boat. I have about 9K left to pay off, and my credit score is hovering right arond 600, up from the 524 it used to be about a year and a half ago. If you still have accounts open, treat them well and keep them open. Pay them on time. For the accounts that are delinquent, in collections or listed as a chargeoff, pay them as soon as you can. If creditors are calling you to have you try to settle the debt, ask them to settle for a lower amount. They will try not to do this, but they will eventually settle. Keep telling them that you don’t have any money, and x amount is the only thing you can afford to pay (but be prepared to make this payment that day). Also know that they will likely not settle for anything lower than 50 or 60% on the dollar, though it does happen in certain situations. The longer you’ve had the debt, the lower they will go, especially if it’s a high amount- say several thousand dollars.

In the meantime, keep credit inquiries to a minimum, as that’s bad too…

Good luck!

Does the free credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com give you the actual credit score or just a report?
I ordered my free annual credit report and I got a report telling me the good and possibly negative but where are the actual credit score numbers?

No score on that report; just the text you’ve got.

The law mandating the free annual report didn’t go far enough, in my opinion.

Can Your credit score be different when appling for different types of loans?

Question by Chris L:
Can Your credit score be different when appling for different types of loans?
I know my credit score, but recently went car shopping and the finance manager pulled up my report that showed my scores were 80 points below what the 3 credit bureaus list it as on my report – She went on to explain that the scores vary based on what type of loan you are applying for – I have never heard of this and can’t find any supporting data – Does anyone know?

Best answer:

Answer by burger
I would want to know if you and she were both talking about the FICO score. Credit bureaus are now giving their own scores as competitition against the FICO score. And some of these score as high as 950 or so compared to the FICO score which tops at 850.
Regarding your question, different score values for different loans sound like poppycock to me. Go to another dealer.

Blockbuster and Credit Score?

Question by nauticanadian:
Blockbuster and Credit Score?
The Blockbuster down the street from me has twice now accused me of not returning movies that I’ve rented. There’s no way to prove that I did indeed return them, and the only way I even found out about this both times was by receiving a bill from Blockbuster in the mail. I’m particularly furious since I tend to rent 4 DVDs at a time, which adds up to about $ 60. In any case, I’ve paid both times within a few weeks to a month of receiving the bill. Is there any chance that this can negatively affect my credit? I have pristine credit other than these Blockbuster issues, and I’m worried that I didn’t pay the bills in time. How can I tell if Blockbuster has reported me to a collection agency short of ordering a credit report? I used up my free credit report for this year already… do you think I’m safe or should I be concerned?

Best answer:

Answer by Robin K
Blockbuster does report their collection accounts to the credit reporting agencies – I have seen this many times in the past. They sometimes show under the creditor’s name, usually for bounced checks and such, and sometimes under the collection agency’s name.

You can still get a credit report even if you’ve used up your three free ones, you’ll just have to pay for it.
