Question by browndude731:
Does closing one credit card and opening a new one hurt your credit score?
I am a college student and about 2 weeks ago I was approved for my first credit card. After doing a little research I found out about the Citi Forward Card for College students, which is great because it has a free rewards program. Would closing my first card hurt my credit? or would I be better off applying for the second card and not closing my first card. please any advice would help.

Answer by R T
Opening accounts always causes a small, short term “hit” to your score. Closing cards may do the same thing. Since that is your only card, yes it would probably cause a hit.
Since you are just starting out, you have no history. Now is the time to create a good history. If the first card is not costing you anything, and if you have the self control to use it correctly, I would keep it open. Just the fact that you have it without any late payments helps create good history. Try to get the second card, just don’t get yourself into credit problems by charging stuff (on any card) that you can’t pay off.
My daughter is a college freshman. Getting your first card is difficult enough. I wouldn’t close it for a few years.

Question by :
Where was “The Free Credit Report?”?
So I was trying to get a free credit report online and I came here to Yahoo Answers to ask a question on it but then I found previous similar question just like it.
So I went to Free Credit Report >com to get a “Free Credit Report” and I saw everything I needed to see. Knowing that there are certain Membership Fees I wanted to avoid I read everything as carefully as possible as I could before typing anything in or clicking on something I would regret but I found no indication on getting charged for viewing a “free credit report”.
Somehow I got charged 24.95 because I viewed my scores from all three Credit Bureaus and I don’t recall clicking on something that says “It’s ok to charge me 24.95 for viewing what I think is a free credit report.”
I made sure to call up and cancel the membership so don’t incur Membership fees ($ 14. something)but I also asked the lady why 24.95 and she was all rude cus I couldn’t understand her.
Was it my fault she had a heavy accent??
All I wanted to know was why I got charged for viewing my credit score.
Then she wanted me to have the membership she said ” I CUT YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN HALF AND YOU DONT WANT YOUR MEMBERSHIP?”
I was doing fine without it in the first place I just needed to see it for myself, which by the way is 700, not bad. Why would want to get charged $ 7 every month if I’m not even gunna use it. I only check my score once a year anyway.
Has anyone had a problem with these people???
If so, Where did I make a mistake as to getting charged 24.95 and not knowing about it.
BTW I found out til my bank texted me and sent me a warning about my balance.
And also what might by another quick, fast, easy, and most of all, FREE way to get my credit score?
If not possible as long as it’s free I guess at the very least.
EWWWW no
I hate those stupid commercials, I don’t like watching them. Those tunes are in no way catchy. Like I said I wanted to see what my credit was like.
THANKS LADY(with the long answer)
I know I was gunna get charged for something but they said it was only like a dollar to check to see if my card was valid or not but I guess I should have been more reasonable.

Here’s where you screwed up: You were enjoying the catchy tune and watching the band, and you missed the text that appears on the bottom of the screen at the end. It said you can get a free credit report if you sign up for the credit monitoring plan.
You can get your credit report from the three credit reporting companies for free once a year. Ask each of them 4 months apart and you can have three reports in a year every year.
That’s what you get for letting a commercial sway you.

Question by Larry H:
Is there an access to free credit REPORT without signups?
I would like to get repairs to my credit score underway but I am sick of these so called “FREE” credit report offers that are never “free.” It may well be free but you have to pay for something else to get it. I should be able to view my report WITHOUT signing up for something or paying for something else. After all, it is MINE, right? Does anyone know if this is available?

Annual Credit Report.com
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
You get all three reports free once a year.
Do not fall for any other scam site that will try to charge you for something that is free.
Do not ever get your score unless you know every line of your three reports.
And only get the score if you are about to buy a home or make a major purchase.
The score can be purchased for about $ 20 at myfico.com
(but make sure every line on your reports is in perfect condition first)

Question by mjgreeley909:
BAD!!!! credit?
I keep watching all of your responses and I think a lot of them are great so I thought maybe you guys could help me out. I have bad credit (dont know how bad, cant find a website that could give me my credit score free). I know I have a cell phone bill for $ 1000. A phone bill for $ 350. Credit card for $ 450. A cable bill for $ 127 (that has been paid but is on my credit report as bad). And god knows what else. I always here you guys talking about getting your credit report and disputing them but I know I owe these people. I am a single mom that doesnt work a lot. Can anyone give me some good advice on how to get these off my credit report. I would like to have decent credit within the next 2 years if possible. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

First of all your scores are cheapest via annualcreditreport.com. The reports are free but the scores are $ 5-7. Don’t make the mistake of ordering a different product if you are just after the $ 5-7 scores.
if you can’t afford payments you can get non profit credit counseling and they might set up a debt mgmy plan to reduce what you owe.
Here’s what i recommend. Cancel the cable, get rid of all the bells and whistles for your home phone [voicemail may be $ 5/mth or $ 60/yr... a very usable phone answering machine is $ 5 used.] Change your cell bill to the best plan for your usage.
Figure out what you can manage to pay each month and pay each a portion each month — this is a debt management plan you can get a CCCS office to help with, or you can do it on your own.

Question by Jenny B:
How can you get your credit report and score free without going to the free annual report?
Best answer:
Answer by Studly
You can get a free credit report at http://www.annualcreditreport.com
You can not get a free credit score. If you want one, you would have to “play the game” of going to http://www.freecreditreport.com and signing up for their service, then canceling it within 30 days. This goes to any of the dozen sites that these Yahoo responders are going to give you. Trust me….there are no free scores available.
