How long does it take to obtain your credit score after filing for bankruptcy?

Someone I know recently in bankruptcy, not even a year ago. And got into the face that your credit score is greater than mine and may have a house and I can not. I have nothing wrong with my credit score and never went bankrupt just a couple of credit cards. How long does it really need to increase your score? And the banks that look down on people of this file?
