how long does it take to reestablish a good credit history and score?

Question by ak47:
how long does it take to reestablish a good credit history and score?
I have a bad credit score and right now I am in the process of repaying my debts. Pretty soon I will be finished with school and looking to purchase a car and maybe even an apartment. I wanted to know how long would I have to wait.

Answer by Sarah O
It all depends. I am in the same boat. I have about 9K left to pay off, and my credit score is hovering right arond 600, up from the 524 it used to be about a year and a half ago. If you still have accounts open, treat them well and keep them open. Pay them on time. For the accounts that are delinquent, in collections or listed as a chargeoff, pay them as soon as you can. If creditors are calling you to have you try to settle the debt, ask them to settle for a lower amount. They will try not to do this, but they will eventually settle. Keep telling them that you don’t have any money, and x amount is the only thing you can afford to pay (but be prepared to make this payment that day). Also know that they will likely not settle for anything lower than 50 or 60% on the dollar, though it does happen in certain situations. The longer you’ve had the debt, the lower they will go, especially if it’s a high amount- say several thousand dollars.

In the meantime, keep credit inquiries to a minimum, as that’s bad too…

Good luck!

How long will inquiries bog down my credit score for?

I was mortgage-shopping a month or so ago, and my credit score dropped 20 points. How long will it take (assuming no more inquiries) to regain those points?

Best answer:

Answer by GG Mama
It shouldn’t take too long as long as you are consistently paying your bills on time. If you did all of your searching in a short amount of time, then they should have only counted as one inquiry though. Search for it online, but I do know that there is a specific given time that if there are several inquiries for say, a mortgage, then it counts as one in order to not ding your credit score so much.

How long does it take to est a credit score with a line of credit?

Question by <#3:
How long does it take to est a credit score with a line of credit?
I’m 18, and have no credit. I received a line of credit from America first on my debit card. How long will it take to establish a credit score? How many points do you get a month?

Best answer:

Answer by Mandy
I’ve never heard of a line of credit on a debit card? But if it truly is credit, and has a limit, then I would say 3 months to a year depending on how you are using it. You can’t max it out, and you need to only use 30% and pay it off or near to each month. If your not using it you can’t really establish credit. It might be quicker to ask your parents (if they have good credit) if you can ride on one of their credit cards for a little bit (you don;t need to have the card) their score transfers to you…

How long will it take to move my credit report from 579 to 650?

Question by Sunfire03:
How long will it take to move my credit report from 579 to 650?
I am working on improving my credit score, but it seems that it is taking forever. How long will it take to move my credit score from 579 to 650?

Best answer:

Answer by Jeff
It depends on how it got to 579 in the first place.

If it’s from not paying bills and they got reported, then it’s going to take a while so that your “bad credit history” is no longer your “recent credit history”.

If it’s from taking on too much debt, then as soon as you pay it off, it’ll go back up.

How long does it take to raise a credit score about 20 points?

Question by Brian T:
How long does it take to raise a credit score about 20 points?
and will it go up if you just start to pay off some of your old debt and make payments on other stuff?

Best answer:

Answer by ronnieD
At least 2 months given that you’ve done some major changes to your debts. Credit cards need to be at least 50% below credit limit, under 25% to see noticeable changes. No lates. Lots of things factor into this.

How long does it take to bring up your credit score, pay today, good credit tomorrow?

How long does it take to bring up your credit score, pay today, good credit tomorrow?
If you have bad credit, but you pay all of your debts, how long would it be before you have good credit? Does it happen overnight?

Best answer:

Answer by kimpenn09
No. If you had any delinquent accounts, they would stay on your record for–wait for it–7 years.

That’s not to say your credit wouldn’t improve in the interim. Credit issuers report to credit agencies every 30-60 days or so. And the further away you are from your debt, the higher your credit score will go. Six months from now, your credit should be drastically improved if you don’t have any more delinquencies. Your score is constantly fluctuating based on how you use credit–not just how much you spend, but how many accounts you open, how late you are with your payments, etc.

I use a credit monitoring system through Equifax.com. For $ 7 a month, they text message me every time my score changes.

I finally am paid up on a student loan that’s ruined my credit….how long til it gets better?

Question by aleximoose:
I finally am paid up on a student loan that’s ruined my credit….how long til it gets better?
I have been past due for monnnnthsss and i pay them money every month (it’s 300 month regularly…..and i was about 1,900 past due from when I was down on my luck) and have been doing good and have finally been able to pay it down so I’m not behind but they report it to the credit bureau like every 30 days when it’s past due….. My credit score went from a 703 to 560 in a year because of this!!! I’m finally paid up….who do I write letters to and what do I send to let the credit bureaus know that I’m no longer behind?? I want my credit score to start improving immediately so I can buy a house! How long does it take for a credit score to improve? I have a car loan…student loans….one credit card and steady good job…have been paying allll bills in my name early and on time for the past year and have finally caught up with that one student loan. THANKS!!

Best answer:

Answer by Dragnet
You need to start now by writing letters to the loan company for the student loan, explain that looking at your account you are now solvent and they need to mark your account that way. It usually takes 6 months of no issues and the number goes up..
But on the other side. I have a mid 6 figure income and my “FICO” is in the 300′s. I don’t care, as credit is not part of my life nor should it be for anyone. Now your case is acceptable, but if you have Credit card debt get out of it, make the cash flow increase and you feel better not owing anyone.

How long will it take for me to establish good credit?

Question by Droga A:
How long will it take for me to establish good credit?
I am 18 years old in my first year of college. I got my first credit card (Visa) when I started school, my parents didn’t cosign. I have kept my monthly balances below 70 percent of my credit limit and have payed the full amount on time every month. How long will it take for me to get a good credit score?

Best answer:

Answer by StephenWeinstein
There is no specific score that is defined as “good” or not good. In one year, your score will be better than it is now. In two years, it will be better than in one year. If you are using the word “good” to mean “at least 800″, then it will take longer than if you are using the word “good” to mean “at least 650″.
